Country Music Television: CMT, Videos, Music And Artists

What is Country Music Television, or CMT? CMT is a cable station that constantly has the latest updates and biographies on country music artists, regularly plays the newest and hottest country music videos, and also has regularly aired television shows.

Country Music Television was created by Glenn D. Daniels and first aired on March 5, 1983. The headquarters for Country Music Television is located in Nashville, Tenn., arguably the capital of Country Music. Country Music Television is not aired on basic cable, only expanded cable.

Initially CMT was called CMTV, but had to drop the V when MTV protested. Though hundreds of country music artists have aired their country music videos on the station, the first was Faron Young with his song, “Four in the Morning.” The song was chosen because founder Glenn Daniels was a fan, and the his son, Glenn D. Daniels, was often awake until four in the morning preparing for the opening.

Today, Country Music Television features country music artists such as Charlie Louvin, Jack Ingram, Emmylou Harris, and Alabama. In addition to bios on most country music artists, these featured artists have the spotlight. Though Charlie Louvin recently turned 80, he recently released a new album. Jack Ingram's new country music video featuring his song, “Love You,” has been nominated for the CMT Wide Open Country video of the year. Over the last 30 years, Emmylou Harris has sold 15 million records. Alabama is relatively new, and only just releasing their second gospel album on March 27, 2007.

Other top country music artists include Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, Rascal Flatts, Alan Jackson, Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, and Brad Paisley. To check out some of the top country music artists, browse through the country music videos, the country music artist's biographies, and see what's new.

Country Music Videos have changed over time. The music and singers have changed, and technology has advanced. However, the ideas behind the songs remain the same. As Willie Nelson said, "People tell their life stories through country music." Country music appeals to how people see the world and to their life experience. Country music videos are designed to  support the story and song. This is vastly different from MTV, because the idea for the video doesn't come from the actual song. CMT videos don't need to incorporate outside ideas because the song itself tells a complete story.

Each year, CMT has a music award for the top country music videos. 2007's nominees include Toby Keith's “A Little Too Late,” Dixie Chicks' “Not Ready to Make Nice,” George Strait's “The Seashore's of New Mexico,” Rascal Flatt's “What Hurts the Most,” Carrie Underwood's “Before He Cheats,” Keith Urban's “Once in a Lifetime,” Sugarland's “Want To,” and Kenny Chesney's “You Save Me.” Country Music Television also gives awards to the best male video of the year, female video of the year, duo video of the year, breakthrough video of the year, wide open country video of the year, and video director of the year. Country music listeners are invited to cast their vote.

Country music lyrics are vivid. The songs tell the truth about life in a way that pop music will never be able to do. The music, lyrics, chords, videos, and artists all play a part in that. Country Music Television has changed along with country music, country music videos, and country music artists, but one thing has not changed: a love for country music, and a desire to bring it not only to country music lovers, but to the public at large.
