International Country Music Artists: Australian, Canadian And American

While pop, rock and hip-hop music all certainly have a lock on the ears of millions of Americans these days, it is important not to overlook another one of the nation's most popular music genres: country. Some of the greatest names in music today are coming from the country music world.
American country music artists such as Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood are becoming nearly as familiar as other celebrity household names such as Britney Spears, Jay-Z and Kelly Clarkson. But talented drawlers are found not only in the United States. Few Americans know country songs are hitting the airwaves not only in Nashville, but in Toronto and Sydney as well. Canadian country music artists and Australian country music artists are sending country songs to the top of the charts. Half the time these songs become successful without the public being aware their favorite country music artists are not from the U.S
The country music scene in Canada is thriving today. Canadian country music artists have come a long way from 1976 when they first organized the entity today known as the Canadian Country Music Association. Since 1982, when the first Canadian country music artists were recognized with the Canadian Country Music Awards, great strides have been made by country music artists from the north. Though quite a distance from the Grand Ole' Opry, country music artists from up north are every bit as entertaining and talented homegrown country music artists.
Modern Canadian country music artists include such skilled singers as Terri Clark and Shania Twain. The former, only one of many country music artists from Quebec, had Top 10 U.S. hits and #1 Canadian hits with songs such as Poor, Poor Pitiful Me and Emotional Girl. Shania Twain, hailing from Ontario, is even more successful in record sales than Clark in both the U.S. and Canada. Twain's album Come on Over gave her the title of female with the biggest-selling album of all time.
Australian country songs have a surprisingly long history. One element of this genre of music that sets it apart from American country music is it is often influenced by folk music. The song "Waltzing Matilida" is an example of purely Australian country music also known as bush music, the form of Australian country music with a longer history. The modern form of Australian country music, shaped more by American country music, was not born until the 1930s. Another distinct trait of country music from Down Under is Australian aboriginal country music. Aboriginal Australian country music artists hold as uniquely a long-standing tradition in country music as their non-aboriginal counterparts, as it has often provided the disenfranchised former with a political and social voice.
Mainstream Australian country music artists include the likes of Keith Urban, an artist originally from New Zealand but raised in Australia, as well as rising stars such as Morgan Evans. Rising from the ranks of background guitarist for fellow country music artists Brooks and Dunn, to a successful solo career, Urban's song, Someone Like You, was at the top of the country charts longer than any other single in 2002.
Next time a slew of country songs comes on the radio, be sure not to exclude Australian country music artists or Canadian country music artists at the helm. Certainly, to diversify any genre of music is what growth and progress in music is all about.
